Natural Health: Body Detoxification
Detoxing your body, also known as cleansing or natural body detoxification, is the most effective natural healing method known to man. Our body has built in detoxifying methods to protect it.
If the human body is made to naturally detoxify itself, why do I need to detox?
Unfortunately, our world today is so full of toxins that affect us daily, it overwhelms our natural detoxifying system. Sometimes our body needs help to restore it to its full vitality. Personal products we use every day, household cleaners, the foods we eat, and even the air we breathe – all have toxins.
The human body naturally tries to protect us from these toxins so it will try to isolate and store the toxins in fatty tissues and mucous. When toxins build up and accumulate over time our systems just become overwhelmed. Once our natural cleansing process is overcome with this continuous onslaught of toxins, a myriad of both physical and mental problems can develop.
Why should I Detox?
As an example of why detoxing your body is necessary, let’s talk about your skin for just a minute.
Take a look at your skin…
Now take a good look.
Do you see anything like rashes, psoriasis, eczema, acne, blemishes, dry skin, etc.? If you do, you could most likely benefit from a body detoxification program.
Did you know that your skin is the biggest organ of the human body? That’s right! It’s an organ that serves many important purposes. The skin has sweat glands which excretes waste products from the body. So, you see, even the skin has a part in the cleansing and detoxing your body process.
Those rashes, blemishes, and such could be a result of your skin’s detoxifying process being on overload. Of course, there are many other possible indicators that you need to detoxify your body.

- Arthritis, joint pain, unexplained aches and pains
- Problems sleeping
- Problems with concentration or memory

How do I Detox? The Detox Diet
During a natural body detox you will be cleansing, nourishing, and resting your body from the inside out.
Here are the things you need to eliminate to detox properly.
- Saturated fats
- Processed (refined) foods
- Reduce or eliminate animal foods
Choose wholesome, organic fruits and vegetables when possible (if the cleansing program you choose allows).
During the detoxification process, it’s important to decrease stress where and when possible. It’s a good time to start a program of yoga or meditation. Chronic stress adds more problems to a body that is already overloaded with toxins.
Adrenaline and cortisol accumulated due to chronic stress will increase your risk for things such as increasing weight, insomnia, heart disease, and depression especially if you are on toxin overload. Your body doesn’t stand a fighting chance against all these enemies unless you do something to help it.
What are the Effects of a Detoxing Your Body?

- Your emotional outlook will be brighter and happier.
- You’ll have mental clarity, more energy, and clearer, smoother skin.
- You’ll most likely shed some pounds along with the accumulated waste and fermenting
bacteria in your digestive system.
- The mucous and toxins plugging up organs will be gone which will make all your body processes
function more efficiently.
- Those aches and pains may all together disappear.
How long does it take?
There are many different programs for detoxing your body. The amount of time spent detoxing depends on the type of detox you choose. The time frame for the programs run anywhere from as little as 24 hours to 30 days and some even go beyond that.
It depends on what your goals are for cleansing as to the time you will need to spend on the process. You may have health problems that have taken shape over a long period of time, not just a day or two. Read about various body detoxification programs and decide for yourself which one would best suit your body.
It is always good to check with your health practitioner before you begin a cleansing program. There are people that will simply not be able to tolerate detoxifying.
Are there any side effects?
It’s important for you to know what to expect during your natural body detox program. Everyone is different and will not necessarily experience the same side effects. You may feel differently with each cleanse you do.
It is frequently the case that the first cleanse you do will have the most intense side effects while it is healing and cleansing your body. There may be a period of a healing crisis.
A healing crisis means that your symptoms may worsen before they start getting better. You may experience some things like headaches, colds, increased acne, etc. These are indicators that your body is indeed detoxifying as it should.
It is important to drink lots of water and get extra rest during the healing crisis.
When should you start cleansing?
